Curriculum Updates: 

Math: 

3rd: Third grade students continue to learn about fractions on a number line.  In addition, we are working on a math through art project with combining different fractions (halves, thirds, fourths, sixths).  

4th: Fourth graders continue to explore fractions. We have been working adding and subtracting mixed numbers and solving problems about fractions and line plots. Soon, we will explore decimals and practice adding and subtracting decimals. 

Reading: We continue to use a literacy menu to guide our reading. We have started a new read aloud The Wild Robot to review character traits and learn about plot and theme. Students continue to read informational and narrative text and respond to questions using the RACE model. This week we focused on the E part, which is Explain

Writing: We have begun our Persuasive Writing Unit. Students have come up with ideas to persuade others to care about making changes in their lives and their world. This week students will craft strong opinions on a topic they feel passionate about. They will also come up with reasons and examples to support their opinions.

News and Updates:

Sailing Field Trip:  We will have our final sailing field trip at the end of May.  Our class will be visiting on Thursday, May 23rd.  Stay tuned for a permission form with more details.

4th Grade Events: 

We are busy planning for end of the year events.  There are many events that happen for 4th graders.  Here are some of the events that are planned so far:

• Thursday, May 30: 4th Grade Track Meet at MMU track (Rain Date June 3rd)
• Friday, May 31: 4th Grade Move Up Day at BRMS (afternoon)
• Friday, June 7: 4th grade fun day (Mills Riverside Park)

IMPORTANT DATES FOR RISING 5TH GRADERS (From BRMS)

• 4/18:  Rising 5th Grade Parent/Caregiver BRMS Building Tour, 1:15 p.m.
• 5/1:  Rising 5th Grade My Child As A Learner forms due
• 5/28:  Rising 5th Grade Parent Orientation Night, 6:30 p.m.
• 5/31:  Rising 5th Grade Move Up Day (leave UCS around 11:00 a.m.)

Nuts and Bolts April 9, 2024

Eclipse Glasses Reuse! 

Please send your eclipse glasses back to UCS.  Mrs. Bernier and Mrs. Cowan’s classes are working with CSWD to donate them to Astronomers Without Borders.  The glasses will be sent to other places in the world where people may not have access to the glasses.  

KIDS ON BIKES:  You should have received information about Kids on Bikes which will begin in May.  If you have not received the information at home, reach out to Jeremy Francis at KidsonBikesVT@gmail.com

Rocket Day:  4th grade Rocket Day has been scheduled and we are looking for monetary donations from caregivers to help pay for rockets.  Please see this attached flier for more information:  2024 Rocket Day.

UCS PTO: Please consider reaching out to the PTO and supporting their efforts.  We are looking to fill positions on the board, so that the PTO can continue as a nonprofit organization next school year and beyond.  

VTCap Testing:  Students in 3rd and 4th grade will continue taking the Vermont Comprehensive Assessment Program (VTCAP) in mathematics and English Language Arts.  Testing is scheduled for April 9th and 11th.  HERE is additional information about the assessment.

Optional Spring Conferences:  Conference Sign Ups were scheduled to go home today. Due to the Snow Day, they will be sent home with your child tomorrow. Please send the filled in form back by Thursday, March 14th. If you do not need a conference at this time, please know that you can always reach out to discuss your child’s progress.  

Report Cards:  Your child’s report card will be coming home with them on Friday, March 15th.  Any questions you may have can be discussed at conference time.

Girls On The Run:  Girls On The Run for 3rd and 4th grade girls begins Monday, March 18th.  Please register your child at https://www.gotrvt.org/  If you have questions, reach out to Kim Aucter at kim.aucter@mmuusd.org
