Celebrating Ms. Broome and More!

Learning highlights from the week:

Math

First graders are beginning a unit on place value.  The understanding that 10 ones is the same as 1 ten is a foundational idea for first grade, and the bases of future place value learning.

Second graders began their end of unit assessment but we have not finished.  We will continue to finish that up and begin our new unit next week.

Reading- Students continued to work with R-Controlled Vowels or Silent “e” words this week. Next week we will wrap up those spelling patterns. In addition, students finish plant books with Ms. Broome. They read interesting facts about plants!

Science- This week students continued to observe their cattle bean plants! It is amazing how quickly the plants have sprouted. We will continue with plants and their needs until April break.

Mindfulness-  We continued our talk  about respect for self and others, and how to keep our bodies in the “green zone” during the school day.  The “green zone” is when we are regulated and our prefrontal cortex is able to function at its best, helping us to be good thinkers and learners.

Growing Cattle Beans and More!

Learning highlights from the week:

  • Math First Grade: Students did a mini unit on time with Ms. Broome.

  • Math Second Grade:  Second graders continue working on efficient strategies for addition.  We are trying to move away from the use of a number line and think about place value when adding numbers.

  •  Reading: We continue our work with spelling/reading patterns, and studying character traits.  We are reading about character traits and changes. We will be moving to setting, plots, and problems/solutions next week!

  • Plants: Students are learning all about plants and their needs! They planted cattle beans and are journaling about their development.

  • Science:  We are all very excited about the upcoming eclipse.  Check backpacks for your child’s eclipse glasses.

  • Mindfulness: As always, focused breathing is such an important part of our day.  We also continued work on kindness, both noticing it and practicing it.

Here is a great book about kindness you might like to share with your child.

Second graders continue working on adding and subtracting 10’s and 100’s to numbers over 100. They are learning strategies to use place value to solve the problems.

Reading-Students continued their work with silent e or r controlled vowels.  Students are also in book clubs. Some books are Go Dog Go, Bink and Gollie, Owl Diaries and Merlin Mission - A Perfect Time for Pandas.

Science-  This week we started a new life science unit on plants! We have beans germinating! Next week we will plant them.

Mindfulness-  We continue to focus on optimism as well as how to use mindfulness to help us regulate our energy and emotions during the day. We have also spent the week reviewing classroom and schoolwide expectations.
